The spirit of enquiry should be stimulated in the child at this stage. Curiosity or interest is the sole guide in this period of education. In this period curiosity develops and creates in the boy an urge for knowledge. It is, therefore, the time for work, instruction and enquiry. He gains physical strength and, with it, intellect also makes its appearance. His organs and powers have been perfected. The boy is now on the verge of adult life. It is also the period for the acquisition of knowledge. This is the preadolescent stage and the period of intellectual education. Instruction at this stage must conform with the child’s ability. These can be trained by intimate contact with the forces and phenomena of nature. “Nature desires that children should be children before they are men.”Įducation during childhood should be exclusively directed towards the training of senses. It should consist not in the teaching of virtue or truth, but in the preservation of heart from vice and the mind from error. Let him learn by experience and the results of his own conduct.Įarly education should chiefly be negative. So no intellectual training during this period is to be given but moral training is to be given by example and through the theory of natural consequences. The child at this stage lacks proper power of reasoning. This period can aptly be called the period of sense education. Hence, during this period, attention should be focused on training the senses. The child’s mind is dominated by the senses. When the infant grows into a child, he has different needs. It is the most critical period of human life. Only those ideas should be given to him about which he can think and understand.
